Wallingford-on-Thames dates back to the 10th century and was used
as a strategic base by William the Conqueror, who completed
his castle in 1071. Little remains of the castle today, which was destroyed by Cromwell’s army. The town was granted its Charter by King Henry II in 1155, 32 years before London.
