Wallingford-on-Thames dates back to the 10th century and was used as a strategic base by William the Conqueror, who completed his castle in 1071. Little remains of the castle today, which was destroyed by Cromwell’s army. The town was granted its Charter by King Henry II in 1155, 32 years before London.
Today, Wallingford has a vibrant market place with a good selection of specialist and antique shops, along with a number of High Street stores. There are also good recreational and sporting facilities. The River Thames runs along the eastern edge of the town.
